Medgar Evers College
Preparatory School’s mission is to provide our diverse
student population with a rigorous education which includes co-curricular
and extra-curricular activities. MECPS will provide a supportive environment
that recognizes individual learning styles and strengths. This initiative
will ultimately support student's self-development, increase self-esteem,
instill intellectual curiosity, and develop a love for lifelong learning.
Each student will be given the opportunity to become active participants
and contributors to their local and global communities.
MECPS will provide students
with the support and opportunities that will encourage them to pursue
careers in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology; areas in
which minorities are severely under-represented. These young people will
be prepared to face the ever evolving challenges of the 21st century.
Students are immersed in academically challenging study
with requirements that include four years each of English/language arts,
mathematics, science, technology and three years of second language courses.
Students must also complete at least one Advanced Placement course in
each of the following disciplines: English/language arts, mathematics,
science and the social sciences. Additionally, students are expected to
sit for the College Board examinations related to each Advanced Placement
course taken. Enrollment in credit bearing college courses and research
internships at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York, begins
in the 10th grade and students may earn up to 11 college credits each
semester, beginning in the 11th grade. Student creativity, character development
and social responsibility are cultivated through individualized guidance
and college advisement, athletics, clubs, fine and performing arts events,
community service and mentorships.

College Study While in High School
A unique aspect of the program of studies offered at MECPS
is the opportunity for students to (1) enroll in actual college courses,
(2) accumulate course credits which are transferable to other colleges
around the country and (3) earn a college degree while simultaneously
completing all requirements for New York State Regents diploma.
Dual Enrollment Program
The Dual Enrollment Program is a collaboration between Medgar
Evers College and Medgar Evers Preparatory School. With its inception
in January 2002, Medgar Evers College Prep students are taking advantage
of the various opportunities offered through this affiliation.
The Dual Enrollment Program fosters student and parent involvement prior
to the actual college experience, and promotes planning, discussion, support
and inquiry about the college experience. It is designed to foster awareness
that parental involvement can enhance the academic and career goals of
youth in immeasurable ways.
The Dual Enrollment Program provides Medgar Evers College
Preparatory School students with the opportunity to enroll in college
credit-bearing courses taught at Medgar Evers College.
These courses enable students to accumulate college credit while simultaneously
earning credit toward their high school graduation requirements. All courses
are free of charge, with all the services and amenities that are offered
to any college student.
Supports and encourages students’ interest in math, science, and
technology, and provides an academic environment that fosters analysis,
research, and practical application.
